Steel Street Mid Term Blog Post
A Little About Me
My name is Eve Cole, and I am a senior at Kansas State University. I am currently studying advertising and public relations with a social media certification as well as a marketing minor. I am originally from a super small farm town called Goodland, Kansas. I always tell people that to find it, just keep going west till you get to the very last town, and that's me! Goodland is also the first town to hit Mountain Time in Kansas, so when driving there, make sure you switch your clock an hour backward.
After college, my goal is to end up somewhere big. Coming from a small town, I have always wanted to be a big city girl. As much as I love farm life, I need a big change. As for my career, I would like to either work in marketing for a cosmetic company or work on the PR team for a public figure.
A Little About Steele Street
The company I work for is called Steele Street College Consulting. Their company helps high school students with the college application process, from transcript review, SAT and ACT test planning, interview preparation, financial aid, and much more. Located in Denver, Colorado, they help many students get into their dream colleges. Their team is comprised of only women and has visited 164 colleges and counting. They find it very important to visit colleges, big or small, so they can personally understand the community and culture for their clients.
What I've Been Up To
Through my internship, I have been kind of the jack of all trades. My title has been media intern. I started with just working on video media with the goal of creating a TikTok account for their company. However, as I have spent time with the company, I have also started to create future social media flyers that they can post throughout the year as different things come up. It has also been brought up that I may help with their Facebook and even email. Like I said, my role has been very broad and open for growth and multiple opportunities.
I have enjoyed my role because it has been so broad, which has made me feel like I have learned so much. There have been times I have had to figure out things on my own, which has made me a better problem solver and future employee. The projects I have enjoyed most have been working with Canva and creating future media posts. This is where I feel most comfortable, as I have done this in the past for other companies, or even through high school with my dance studio. Working with TikTok has been both very fun and rewarding, but also frustrating at times. I have never done video editing on a big scale before, and so learning the new tricks has been difficult, especially because they have no one on their current team who works with video at all. On the other hand, it has been so much fun brainstorming ideas with the team and my advisor and talking to college students.
Wrapping It Up
Overall, this internship has brought out my strengths and my weaknesses. It has shown me what I am good at and what I still need to work on. It has also been nice being able to get some real experience with set expectations to follow. It is so much different and presents a different pressure from college classes. This has shown me what life will be like in a small 6 months. I love working with media, and I know that through this career I will have to be creative, attentive, and proactive. All in all am very grateful for this experience, and will use it to grow myself further.
